CHRISTINE GOODALE

Flowers in a Golden Frame

These recent drawings are inspired by the Moon Garden in the artist’s back garden at her home in the ex-infirmary at Cranbrook School designed by the architect Eliel Saarinen. The white flowers glow brilliantly as twilight descends. The study of the proportions and shapes of flowers has led to a search for frames and enclosures to separate but inter relate the organic forms. They are always ordered within a certain proportion, a grid, an architectural space, a golden rectangle. These spaces incorporate an awareness of the golden section, which gives a lyrical and sure consistency to the overall feel of the composition. Presently the artist is seeking ways to give translucence and depth to the drawings by treating the rice paper both before and after the actual drawing and by using multiple layers of paper. The lily, the peony and the orchid are her preferred subjects.
